Hello Rideau Families!
Job Action Impact on School Operations
As you are all aware, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is preparing for an Alberta Teacher’s Association (ATA) strike beginning on Monday, Oct 6. This labour action is set to occur across the province as it impacts all public, catholic and francophone school boards, impacting an unprecedented number of families and staff.
Please note that ATA staff at Rideau Park School – teachers, principal and assistant principal – will not have access to CBE e-mail, D2L or Google Classroom for the duration of job action. If you need to contact the school, you can still e-mail our general inbox: RideauPark@cbe.ab.ca as it will be monitored by support staff.
As shared centrally by the CBE, if strike action commences on October 6:
- All classes will be cancelled. Do not send your child to school.
- Transportation will be cancelled. Do not leave your child at a bus stop.
- All school athletics, trips and extracurricular activities will be suspended or cancelled. Rescheduling some events may be considered depending on the duration of the strike.
- Summit Kids is expected to continue operations. Please contact them directly if you have questions.
UPDATE TODAY: Students will have access to D2L and Google classroom throughout labour action. Teachers will not be monitoring, responding to, or assessing student work during the strike.

Please note that our Rideau Park social media accounts will not be monitored for the duration of the ATA strike as they are managed by teachers and school administration.
Athletics Updates – Thank you athletes! Thank you teachers! Thank you families!
Rideau Park School hosted senior girls basketball last night. Our girls took home 1 win and 1 very competitive tie. It was wonderful to welcome teams and guests from other CBE schools. Our senior boys basketball team took home 1 win and 1 loss on Wednesday at Griffith Woods School. Last night on the soccer pitch, our boys also had a close game, finishing with a tie. Our girls’ soccer team has also enjoyed a strong season!
I would like to congratulate all our athletes across soccer, basketball and cross-country for their commitment to our sports teams and for modeling the leadership and citizenship required of our students!
Rideau Park Parents Association – School Council Update
All School Council-organized events planned for the month of October are cancelled. This includes:
- Hot Lunches
- School Council Meeting
- Halloween Dance
School administration is working with the School Council team to determine a future date for a family dance. While the option exists for School Council to book the school gymnasium as a public rental, we collaboratively determined that due to the uncertainty around the duration of strike action and the impact on individual families (scheduling, change to routines), that it would be difficult to organize and run the event as a public rental, as it requires extensive volunteer support. We look forward to working together to plan for another event later in the school year! Our teaching and leadership staff are grateful for the continuous support of our parent community through their volunteerism and engagement with School Council.
As a final note, and on behalf of all teachers at Rideau Park School, we are so proud to be a part of our very special community of students, families and staff.
Sincerely,
Andrea Riquelme
Principal, Rideau Park School
